About the University of Manchester

The University of Manchester (UoM) is located in the North West of England - it is the largest university in the UK, with over 40,000 students and a turnover in excess of £600 million per year. The Greater Manchester area has a population of 2.5m.

The GRaBS team is based in the School of Environment and Development which combines the disciplines of geography, planning and landscape, and development policy and management. Another resource within the school is the Centre for Urban and Regional Ecology, established in 2000, which researches into regionalism, sustainability and rebuilding environmental capital. The team has accumulated extensive experience in climate change impact research and environmental planning and management including the challenges to define and deliver environmental buildings, networks and cities, which will be crucial to successful urban adaptation. The team recently participated in the ASCCUE project (Adaptation Strategies for Climate Change in the Urban Environment), which is relevant to the Risk and Vulnerabilities Assessment Tool in the GRaBS project.

University of Manchester and the GRaBS project Research within UoM aims to contribute to the increasingly important agenda of adapting to the impacts of climate change. GRaBS provides an important opportunity to take this research forward, and to help deliver positive change in Europe’s cities and urban areas. The UoM is also aiming to expand its partnership networks throughout Europe and within the UK.

The UoM has a specific responsibility for developing a climate change Risk and Vulnerabilities Assessment Tool to be used as a decision-making in the strategic planning of climate change adaptation responses in urban areas. UoM will develop and pilot the tool with all relevant GRaBS partners.
